Reader’s Question:

We bought a car for my daughter in Colorado and we live here in Houston. We are just wondering if we need to get insurance in both location.

Bill

Houston TX

The answer is No. It is actually not possible to get car insurance in both states. Normally, you will have to get insurance for the vehicle where it is registered. Generally, the garaged location and where it is is driven should be the state where you should get car insurance for it. If the vehicle is registered in your daughter’s name she may be able to insure it in her home state. It may be difficult to get insurance for the car if it is registered in one state and will be driven and garaged in another state.

Your daughter may also try getting her own car insurance on the vehicle although she does not have insurable interest in the automobile. She may have a difficult time finding an car insurance company that will insure the vehicle if it is not registered under her name. But there are some insurance carriers that allow this.

Goodluck!

Reader’s Question:

How can I get free car insurance quote for my mom who is already a senior citizen? I hope I can get a low-cost policy for her so that she could better enjoy her retirement here in Texas.

Leila

Austin, TX

Leila, you should not worry much about your mom’s car insurance policy even with the financial setbacks that our country is experiencing right now. And furthermore, getting her free car insurance quote is the last thing that you should be worrying about because you can easily get it when you get in touch with car insurance companies there in Texas or when you go online to visit their Web sites.

On the matter of a low-cost policy, you should not put your attention too much on the price. I know that your budget might be tight, but car insurance which is cheap on the onset may not be able to fully protect your mother the way she should be. The cheap policies usually have only the most basic of coverage.

What you should do is avail of a car insurance policy with a reasonable price and enough coverage, and then try to lower its amount by asking for discounts. That should not be too hard because senior citizens are entitled to as much as 10% discount. This is because they belong to that side of the spectrum of people viewed by car insurance companies as less likely to make claims frequently. So, you should definitely take advantage of this discount.
