Reader’s Question:

My cousin just got her driver’s license and her new car. Last week, she went for a short drive and ended up getting into a minor accident (although it wasn’t really her fault). The problem is the car is not yet insured. I just want know what will happen to her for driving without car insurance in Dallas.

In Texas, there is a law that requires all car owners to carry and maintain proof of financial responsibility. This proof should be in the form of car insurance and should have minimum liability coverage. In April 2008, the state revised their Minimum Insurance Law and implemented the 25/50/25 coverage. This is to cover $25,000 worth of injuries of one person per accident, $50,000 worth of injuries for to or more persons, and $25,000 worth of property damages.

A person who violates this law will be required to face certain penalties. If caught driving without car insurance for the first time, the person will be asked to pay a fine amounting to $300 (it could be lower depending on what the court dictates). For the second violation, the fine could increase up to $350 or more. And for the succeeding violations, the fine could reach as high as $1000. Aside from this, the person’s driving license could also be suspended and the car could be impounded.

Advise your cousin to get the minimum required coverage once she applies for car insurance in Dallas. But make sure that she refrains from driving her car until the insurance policy is all set. This could prevent her from having a bad motor vehicle record and from paying further expense.
