If I fail to present car insurance in Houston for the second time, will I be required to get an SR22?

Typically, if you fail to show any proof of financial responsibility for the second time, you will be required to get an SR22. The SR22 is another way of giving an assurance that you have financial responsibility. However, this alone does not stand as an insurance policy–that’s why you still need to get insured once your SR22 expires.
In Texas, there are different ways of showing financial responsibility. You could opt for the following ways to show that you carry the required financial responsibility:
- Car liability insurance policy
- Self-insurance under Sec. 601.124
- Deposit under Sec. 601.122
- Deposit under Sec. 601.123
- Surety bond under Sec. 601.121.
To avoid having to get an SR22, make sure that you get car insurance in Houston. However, you need to be aware that Texas has a Minimum Insurance Law. This law states that every car insurance policy must carry a minimum coverage of 25/50/25. This coverage is for $25,000 worth of injuries sustained by one person, $50,000 worth of injuries sustained by two or more persons (in a single incident only), and $25,000 worth of damages caused to another person’s property. Previously, the minimum required coverage is 20/40/15; however, it was increased to 25/50/25 in April 2008.
