Texas Car Insurance Question

Reader’s Question:

We bought a car for my daughter in Colorado and we live here in Houston. We are just wondering if we need to get insurance in both location.

Bill

Houston TX

The answer is No. It is actually not possible to get car insurance in both states. Normally, you will have to get insurance for the vehicle where it is registered. Generally, the garaged location and where it is is driven should be the state where you should get car insurance for it. If the vehicle is registered in your daughter’s name she may be able to insure it in her home state. It may be difficult to get insurance for the car if it is registered in one state and will be driven and garaged in another state.

Your daughter may also try getting her own car insurance on the vehicle although she does not have insurable interest in the automobile. She may have a difficult time finding an car insurance company that will insure the vehicle if it is not registered under her name. But there are some insurance carriers that allow this.

Goodluck!
